Self-Reliance Resources from 2022
Here are all the resources I used to teach myself new self-reliant skills last year
If you’ve read my post about my 2023 Self-Reliance Challenge and how I tackled my first challenge in 2022, then you know I promised to provide all the resources I used to teach myself several skills last year. If you haven’t read that post yet voila below…
So let’s go month to month and skill to skill and I’ll share all the online and paper resources I’ve been using to educate myself about self-reliance.
Gluten-Free Sourdough
It was really hard to find resources around gluten-free sourdough baking. I had previously enjoyed watching Jillian Michael’s Instagram on occasion and had heard her talk about her mother or mother-in-law and how she had created a gluten-free sourdough cookbook. So I purchased it on Amazon and it’s an amazing resource. It taught me how to make a gluten-free sourdough starter with buckwheat and brown rice flour and the rest is history.
I purchase the Bob’s Red Mill brand of flour from Buckwheat to Brown Rice to Sweet Rice to Millet to Sourghum to Tapioca and more. While gluten-free sourdough baking requires a lot of ingredients, it’s a pretty easy process to follow and doesn’t involve as much time folding and shaping as in regular sourdough.
Canning
I wanted to learn how to water bath can different vegetables. I did a fun search on YouTube and after watching a bunch of different videos I landed on this lovely lady.
Her voice is a bit cheesy to get past but I simply adore her. She gives me young grandmother vibes.
Here is a video with a step-by-step water canning tutorial on canning pears.
